Are you exposed to toxins in your everyday life that cause weight gain? Unless you are actively taking steps to avoid them, you probably are.

These chemicals, known as “obesogens”, disrupt the way your body regulates the creation and storage of fat. You only need low levels of exposure to increase the likelihood of putting on weight.

Your personal care products can be a significant source of exposure to two of these weight-gaining chemicals – parabens and phthalates. So that’s products such as shampoos, moisturisers, deodorants, hair spray, nail varnish and cosmetics.

 To reduce your exposure, chose products labelled ‘paraben free’ and ’phthalate free’ or check the ingredients list. Some products marketed as natural still contain these chemicals. If a product contains ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’, it may contain obesogens. The individual ingredients that make up a fragrance do not have to be listed on the label. Fragrances often contain parabens as they help the scent last longer.
