How to stop reacting to your emotions by eating

How to stop reacting to your emotions by eating

We learn many of our patterns of eating in early childhood.  There may be many reasons why you react to your emotions in a particular way.
Yet unravelling why we do things the way we do often does solve the problem. Emotional eating is quite complex and very individual. What works for one person may not work for another and this is often where weight loss plans that do not address the emotional side fall down.

Quick, simple and healthy – snacking doesn’t get much easier

Many people avoid nuts when they try to lose weight as they see them as ‘fattening’. But nuts are high in nutrients and great to include (in moderation) – even when you are trying to lose weight. A study using almonds, showed they reduce hunger and the desire to eat. Participants ate less over the rest of the day, naturally compensating for the calories in the nuts.

Making changes to your ideas around weight loss – part 3

So how do you help yourself with the rebel within? How do you start the process of change without having to battle against the inner backlash?

It starts with passive awareness.

[Recipe] This delicious immune-boosting soup may also help your weight loss

This delicious soup is packed full of immune-boosting spices. The garlic also boosts your immune system and the tomatoes contain immune-boosting bioflavonoids.

The black pepper, ginger and chilli can help boost your metabolism, which makes it easier to lose weight.

Emotional Eating

To some extent we all eat emotionally. How can we not? When we are babies we need to bond emotionally to survive. This is not only for our physical survival it’s for our psychological survival too.

Everything is inter-connected

Everything we eat is inter-connected with humankind and the life-systems on the planet. When we have lost a sense of that inter-connection it is easy to eat and live in ways that are not good for us.

Do I really need to eat?

Life in lockdown can feel tough. Feelings run high, we struggle to know what to do with ourselves. It is easy to eat because we are anxious or bored. Pin a note to fridge to remind yourself to check out what you really need before you eat.

Make your home feel safe

When there is a threat to our life it is important to create safety. In this coronavirus crisis we need that safety to be our home. Create a boundary between the outside of your home and the inside. If your home feels safe you may eat less from stress.

Take time to go within

As much as it is important to stay up to date with the news and information, it is also important to take some time away from the outside world for yourself. Take a moment each day to go within. Sit quietly inside or out, light a candle, breathe deeply for 10 mins. twice a day.

When you reach for cake or biscuits

Recently, supermarkets shelves have been stripped bare and many people have stocked up on foods such as biscuits and crisps. It can be easy to overeat these foods, especially when you are stressed. Try putting what you are going to eat on a plate and put the rest away. Sit down and focus on your food. Eat it slowly and enjoy every bite.

Boost your immunity AND help your weight loss

There are no eggs or toilet roll in my local supermarket and some of the things I would normally buy are out of stock. But the one thing they do have is fresh fruit and vegetables. Including some fruit or veg with each meal supports your immune system and can help you lose weight.

Sunshine – how it helps your immune system and your weight

Even during lockdown, it is important to let the sun on your skin. If you can’t get out and don’t have a garden, could you sit on your doorstep or do you have a balcony? If not, could you sit by an open window to get some fresh air and sun on your skin? This can help your immune system and your weight.

Eating regularly helps with stress and your weight

Many people in lockdown have found they are constantly snacking, which can lead to weight gain. Others find they are skipping meals or don’t eat for long periods. Eating 3 small meals a day plus a small snack mid-morning and another mid-afternoon can help with stress and your weight.

Improve your mood, reduce cravings and help your weight

With gyms and pools closed and many people unable to go out, your exercise routine may have been disrupted. However, it is still important to be physically active, particularly in times of stress. Many free online exercise classes are springing up. Exercising burns more calories. But it does so much more to help you lose weight…
