Do you have times that you really want something sweet or chocolatey? Maybe you feel you need your sweet ‘treats’ during lockdown? The problem is that our bodies are not designed to cope with refined sugars.

Sugar is inflammatory and affects your weight in a number of ways. One of these is by raising your blood sugar levels. This causes you to release higher levels of insulin, which tell your body to store fat

These delicious nutty cocoa balls use dates instead of sugar for sweetness. Unlike sugar, dates contain a range of essential nutrients and are anti-inflammatory. (Obesity is an inflammatory condition).

Other ingredients include cocoa or raw cacao and chia seed. Cocoa has many health benefits and may help prevent type 2 diabetes. Chia seed contains omega 3 fats which are essential for health, boost your immune system and may increase the amount of fat you burn.

Nutty cocoa balls

30g roasted hazelnuts*

70g dates

10g milled chia seed

12g cocoa powder or raw cacao

Finely chopped chilli to taste (optional)

  1. Put the roasted hazelnuts in a food processor and process until fine.
  2. Add the dates, milled chia seed, cocoa powder and finely chopped chilli if using and process again.
  3. Form into small balls and keep in the fridge.

*To roast hazelnuts, place on a baking tray and put in a preheated oven (180o) for approximately 10 – 15 minutes. Allow to cool and store in an airtight container. You can use hazelnuts that have not been roasted, but roasting them first is particularly delicious.
